THE REPORT OF ACTIVITIES (2007-2008)
VPM’s Joshi-Bedekar Arts & Commerce College, Thane.
N.S.S. REPORT
1) The activities of the NSS unit of our College commenced on 31st July 2007 with two of our students attending a programme on the importance of ‘blood donation’ organized by the NSS unit of the University of Mumbai.
2) On 1st August 2007, Vidya Prasarak Mandal a parent body of college, organized a tree plantation programme to celebrate its Foundation Day. NSS volunteers actively participated in the programme.
3) On 3rd August 2007, NSS volunteers assisted at the selection round for Mumbai University Youth Festival, which was hosted, in our College.
4) Mumbai Sarwodaya Mandal organized a rally at Azad Maidan on 6th August 2007, which was joined by 15 volunteers of NSS unit of our College. On the eve of 65th anniversary of Quit India Movement, two programmes were organized by Government of Maharashtra on 9th August 2007. One of these was organized at August Kranti Maidan and the others at Ravindra Natya mandir. NSS volunteers attended both the programmes.
5) A tree plantation programme was organized with the help of ‘Hariyali’ a NGO from Thane at Munda Hill, Yeoor on 12th August 2007. Under the guidance of Shri.Lothe, a volunteer from Hariyali, students from NSS unit participated in planting trees.
6) On 15th August 2007, NSS volunteers attended the flag hoisting ceremony in the college campus. The volunteers joined an NGO, Hitech Family Enrichment Foundation in sale of flags. This NGO works for physically challenged students and they collected Rs. 1000/- through the sale.
7) ‘Sadbhavana Divas’ was celebrated on 22nd August in the presence of the District co-ordinator of the NSS unit of Mumbai University Shri.D.Phondekar who was the Chief Guest.
8) On 2nd September two students attended NRD-SRD camp selection held in K.J.Somaiya College.
9) NSS volunteers also participated in Pulse-Polio programme from 9th Sep. to 14th September 2007.
10)Venkatesh Kadam, NSS volunteer participated in a leadership programme organized in K.J.Somaiya college from 10th Sept to 14th September.
11) On NSS day, 24th September 2007 a rally was organized on the theme of ‘Save a Girl-Child’. On this occasion Dr.Vijay Bedekar, President, Vidya Prasarak Mandal administered on oath to all present not to participate in any way in any sex determination test. Principal Dr.(Mrs.) S.A.Singh and Vice-Principal Dr.Murti were also present on the occasion. The rally concluded at the adopted area of NSS unit of Joshi-Bedekar College where NSS volunteers performed ‘Street plays’ on the same theme. Students’ council and women’s studies students of SYBA also joined the rally.
12) A ten-day residential camp was organized at “Mamnoli” near Kalyan from 25th October to 3rd November 2007. 22 volunteers along with members of NSS committee attended the camp. The camp consisted of two types of activities. First was manual work in the tribal area and second was personally development of volunteers through lectures and other activities, which sensitized them about social issues.
13) The anti-dowry week was marked by street plays creating awareness about evil of dowry, which were performed by NSS volunteers on 30th November 2007.
14) On 1st December ‘World AIDS Day’, NSS volunteers went to the adopted area and presented a street play creating awareness about AIDS which was followed by an informal talk with the residents.
15) As part of ‘AIDS awareness’ programme, NSS volunteers in association with ‘Lokmat’, presented street plays in other college like Vikas College on 3rd Dec.2007.
16) NSS volunteers attended performance of the play ‘Mulgi Zali Ho’ by Stree Mukti Sanghatana on 4th December 2007.
17) NSS unit of Ruia College organized intercollegiate competitions for NSS volunteers on 4th & 5th Dec.2007. Our students participated in Essay Writing, Group Song, Rangoli etc. Madhushree Kamat and Venkatesh Kadam bagged the first prize in Rangoli competition.
18) On 8th December 2007, the NSS unit organized a Blood Donation Camp, which received an overwhelming response from the students. As a result as many as 67 bottles were collected. The camp was organized with the help of Civil Hospital, Thane. Prof.Suchitra Naik, Prof.Shivaji Naik, Prof,Bhabad and Prof.Sable donated blood.
19) On 26th January 2008, NSS volunteers attended the flag hoisting ceremony.
20) On 30th January 2008, student volunteers participated in a peace rally organized by Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal.
21) On 13th Feb, the Principal Dr.(Mrs.) S.A.Singh felicitated the Best NSS volunteers at the camp for the year 2007-08. The names of these best volunteers are Gaurav Tatkare, Ranjani Ayyar and Harshala Gulvi.
22) On 18th February 2008 student volunteers attended the felicitation function of NSS and NCC volunteers at the convocation hall organized by the Mumbai University.
In the conduct of the activities of the NSS I have received encouragement and support from our Principal Dr.(Mrs.) S.A.Singh and Vice-Principals Dr.Padmini Murti and Prof.(Mrs.) L.P.Bhat. I am deeply grateful to my committee members – Prof.S.A.Naik, Prof.M.M.Deshpande, Prof.S.A.Naik and Prof.Raksha Mahimkar for their cooperation.
The NSS unit is thankful to students, teachers and the supporting staff for their response and express the wish that it would continue in the years to come.
