THE REPORT OF ACTIVITIES (2008-2009)
( CARRIED BY N.S.S. UNIT OF VPM’s JOSHI – BEDEKAR COLLEGE)
The N. S.S. unit of the college which was of 50 student volunteers increase to 100 students volunteers.
Following are the activities carried by the unit :
- On Sunday 6th July,2008 few of N.S.S. second year volunteers accompanied by Prof. Shivaji Naik joined hands with N.C.C unit of college in TREE PLANTATION PROGRAMME. This programme was organized by Hariyali organization at Lonad near Padgha . The students took care of some plants.
- On Friday 18th July, 2008, 31 N.S.S volunteers accompanied by Prof. Shivaji Naik attended programme organised by MUMBAI UNIVERSITY TO celebrate 152nd FOUNDATION DAY OF MUMBAI UNIVERSITY. The programme was presided by Mr. Vijay Khole the Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai university. The Vice-Chancellor made the students aware of the various education programmes conducted by Mumbai University.
- On Saturday 26th July, 2008, 54 N.S.S volunteers accompanied by Prof. Shivaji Naik and Prof. Kalpana Chandhoke participated in the TREE PLANTATION PROGRAMME. This programme was organized by Hariyali Organization at Lonad near Padgha. The students shifted 1500 trees and were also involved in tree care taking. The plants shifted were Peepal, Neem, Banyan, Bamboo, Giripushpa etc. Due to heavy rains, the volunteers advised by Hariyali organization to shift the plant rather than planting the trees.
- On Saturday 2nd August , 2008, 50 N.S.S volunteers of our college attended the Friendship Day Programme organized by AKSHARA organization at Shubham Karoti Hall at Thane. There was speech on Gender Justice by the Deputy Commissioner of police and the member of AKSAHRA organization. This was followed by skits on Gender Justice and Friendship day. The N.S.S. Volunteers also participated in rally at Talao pali with boards and hoardings conveying the message of true Friendship. The rally ended by leaving Balloons in the sky.
- On Saturday, 2nd August, 2008, our College along with the ‚¿š¸ý™Ãš¸¸ ¹›¸Ÿ¸ºÄ¥¸›¸ ¬¸¹Ÿ¸÷¸ú conducted the programme for creating a scientific awareness approach among the student volunteers of N.S.S. The programme was attended by Mr. Phondekar the district Co-Ordinator of N.S.S.unit of Thane (Dist.), N.S.S. Programme Officers and N.S.S. student volunteers of various colleges in our vicinity also participated in the programme .The programme was attended by 23 Second Year N.S.S. volunteers of our college. The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Dr. Murti the vice-principal of our college. The programme was divided into 3 sessions.
- Mr.Atul Pethe spoke about event management.
- Dr.Bhadlikar a psychiatrist enlightened the students about how to develop
the leadership qualities. - Mr. Swapnil Taware spoke about communication skills.
- Practical Session : Six group of N.S.S. volunteers were formed randomly.
Each group had student’s of different colleges. The number of students in a
group was approximately 13 To 14. The group were assigned 6 different
topics which were £¸«’ïú¡¸ ¬¸µ¸ ‚¸¹µ¸ „÷¬¸¨¸, Astronomy v/s Astrology ,¬¨¸¿ ‚š¡¸¡¸›¸
(Self study), Constitution ¬¸¿¹¨¸š¸¸›¸ ¸¸¿¹š¸¥¸ˆÅú „÷¬¸¨¸, ‚¿š¸ý™Ãš¸¸ Ÿ¸¸½¹Ÿ¸ and Arranging
different events. The 6 groups performed the skit and the best skit was
awarded
- On 12th August,2008, 30 students of Joshi–Bedekar college accompanied by PROGRAMME OFFICER of our N.S.S. unit ® Prof. Mrs. Priyamvada P. Tokekar and Prof. Kalpana Chandhoke attended the training programme organised by Zilla Prishad of Thane for the survey of Mal-Nourished children (age upto six years). It was a one day training programme from 10.00 am.to 6.00 pm. The student volunteers after training were supposed to carry the survey in different areas of the district. Accordingly 26 N.S.S. student volunteers from Joshi –Bedekar college went for next two days for caring survey in the area like Bhiwandi, Wada, Jawahar, Talasari, Ambhan, Murbad, Rayte, Ambarnath, etc. These 26 volunteers surveyed approximately 2500 children. It was an eye opening survey for the students who have spent almost all their lives in the urban areas.
- On the eve of Independence Day, 25 N.S.S volunteers sold the flag worth Rs. 2/- and collected Rs. 2000/-. The Hi-Tech Organisation working for the physically challenged children provided these flags.
- On 15th August 2008, all N.S.S volunteers attended Flag Hoisting programme held in the college premises. Few N.S.S students sang N.S.S. Lakshya Geet on this occasion.
- On 20th August, 2008 a street play competition was organised by Jidnyasa Trust, Thane at Dnyanasadhana College. The topic was Eco-Friendly Ganesh Utsav. 21 NSS student volunteers of Joshi-Bedekar College participated in the competition. Though our NSS student volunteers were not prize winners, they had good response from the audience.
- On 26th August, 2008 campaigining of Blood Donation Programme was undertaken by NSS student volunteers of our college through posters. On 27th August,2008 the NSS student volunteers organised a Blood Donation Programme in association with the Civil Hospital (Thane) in our college. The requirement of blood by the hospital was of 38 bottles. However 69 registrations were done. Many students wanted to donate the blood, however on the request of the hospital, we had to stop the programme by 3.00 pm.
- On 29th August, 2008 a programme with Akshara, an NGO, with whom we are working this year was organized by NSS unit in our college. This programme was attended by all NSS student volunteers of Joshi-Bedekar College & also of Bandodkar College. The topic discussed was on Gender violence especially eve teasing which is an important topic for the young girls today. A documentary film on eve teasing was shown. After the film, students were divided into 2 groups. The myths & realities of eve teasing sexual harassment & gender was discussed.
- On 8th September, 2008 on the eve of Gauri Visarjan, 39 NSS student volunteers & on 14th September,2008 on Annant Chaturthi, 33 NSS students volunteers of Joshi-Bedekar College participated in the various activities such as Registration of names, Traffic control & collection of Nirmalya. The students were divided into groups & were directed into different areas such as Mus Chowk, Jail Talav, Kalwa Khadi, Chintamani Jwellers & Kranti Talav. The NSS girls students volunteers were from 3.00 pm to 9.00 pm & the boys students volunteers were from 3.00 pm to 9.00 pm & the boys students volunteers were from 3.00 pm to 11.00 pm.
- From 9th September,2008 to 13th September, 2008 the student volunteer & secretary of NSS of our college Harshala Gulvi participated in the LTP programme organised by Somaiya college. She is enlightened on various issues discussed in LTP & proposes to implement some of them at college level.
- 24th September, 2008 being NSS day, was celebrated by our college. Vandana Shinde, President of ANIS Thane Shaka had a dialogue with the students about Indian festivals & changing nature of their celebrations. Our NSS student volunteers prepared posters on this topic as well as performs skit on celebration of Ganesh Festival, Navrati Festival, Holi & Diwali. Each skit was followed by the commentaries of Vandana Shinde.
- On 2nd October, 2008, 06 students of second year of NSS unit attended a programme held on the eve of Vishwa Ahimsa Divas in the convocation hall, Mumbai University, Fort. They were accompanied by Prof Shivaji Naik. The programme was held by Rashtriya Seva Yojana in collaboration with the Gandhi’s studies centre, Gandhi Shanti Kendra, Sarvoday Mandal & Sadbhavna Sangh. The students made 04 placards & spread the message of peace. This programme was not attended by F.Y. & S.Y. students of our college because they were busy with their 1st term exams.
- On 25th Nov.,2008 & 26th Nov.,08, 14 N.S.S. students volunteers attended a peer Group workshop on AIDS awareness & sex education organised at Somaiya College.
- On 01.12.2008 all N.S.S. students volunteers accompanied by Prof. Kalpana Chandhoke participated in a rally organized by civil Hospital Thane, the purpose was creating AIDS awareness. Various Banners displaying message of AIDS awareness were used.
- On 03.12.2008, N.S.S. unit of our college with AKSHARA organized a programme on domestic violence on the women on the eve of dowry prohibition week. Mr. Shahir Sambhaji Bhagat by means of Powada highlighted the violence & atrocities inflicted on women.
- On 04th Dec 08, & 05th Dec. 08, 10 to 15 N.S.S. students volunteers participated in inter – college competition Anubhuti held by Ruia college. The various competitions in which the N.S.S. student volunteers participated were Singing, Elocution, Poetry writing & Poster making.
- On 8th Dec. 08, N.S.S. volunteers performed a street play on the theme of creating AIDS awareness in the college campus. The students accompanied by Prof. Shivaji Naik performed the same street play in the adopted area at Kharton Road. A crowd of 70 to 80 people had gathered. There was good response from the people.
- On 10th Dec. 08, a programme on AIDS Awareness & Sex Education was organized by the Red Ribbon Club. The number of students registered were 120. The guest speaker invited was Prof. Seema Ketkar of Dnyana Sadhana College. She gave valuable knowledge & advice to the students. It was a full day programme from 11.30am to 4.00 pm.
- On 11th Dec., 08, a meeting of N.S.S. P.O’s was organized in University club house in Churchgate Prof. Shivaji Naik attended the same. It was addressed by Mr. Pabrekar, state liason officer of Mumbai University. The meeting was with respect to the discussion of conduction a peace ralley in Shivaji Park Dadar in the memory of martyrs of 26 / 11.
- On 12th dec.,08, N.S.S. students volunteers accompanied by N.S.S. P. O. Prof. Tokekar & member of N.S.S. Prof. Shivaji Naik, performed a street play on Andhashraddha Nirmulan in the adopted area. This was followed by Andhashraddha Nirmulan Programme in the adopted area along with Ms Vandana Shinde, President of ANIS (Thane). The purpose of the programme was to create a scientific awareness in the minds of the people & eliminate blind faith in superstitions.
- On 20th Dec. 08, all N.S.S. students volunteers participated in a peace Ralley at Shivaji Park. Many non – volunteers of our college also participated in the ralley. The martyr’s family of 26/11 were honoured.
- On 23.12.2008, Red Ribbon club arranged a poster competition followed by exhibition of the posters. The theme was creating AIDS awareness.
- 50 N.S.S. students volunteers along with the ZP of Thane district under the programme of social Welfare Development are conducting a survey to collect a statistics of number of handicap people in different categories like visual, auditory, mentally challenged ect.
- 15 N.S.S. volunteers participated in the Pulse Polio Programme from 21.12.2008 to 26.12.2008.
- On 15.12.2008, training for the Pulse Polio Programme was imparted to the students.
- From 21.12.2008 to 27.12.2008, 04 N.S.S. volunteers attended University level special camp organized by N.S.S., Mumbai University & Arts, Commerce & Science college Shivale. The various activities under this camp were Akashdarshan, Yoga, Shramadan, disaster management programme, cultural programme, cleanliness programme, Andhashraddha Nirmulan programme & many personality development programme.
- The N.S.S. volunteers who participated in the camp were Dilip Jadhav, Aniket Hindlekar, Sadanand Rajure & Vijay Dhawale.
- On 6th Jan. 2009 In kalsekar college one pay Zonal programme was organized on the theme of the role of youth in national integration ,06 N.S.S. volunteers of our college attended the workshop.
- on 15th Jan., 09, two NSS students volunteers of Joshi-Bedekar College, Girish Sinalkar & Suvidha patil attended a programme at Vidyapeeth Vidyarthi Bhavan at Churchgate about information related to UPSC & MPSC Examination.
- From 21st to 31st Jan., 09 Sanvidhan Mahotsav was celebrated. NSS Unit of our College. Participated in the following manner :
- 5 NSS student volunteers Vijay Dhawale, Prachi Godbole, Aarti Daundkar, Pradnya Devkar & Farah delivered a lecture on Indian Constitution in following Colleges :
- R.J.Thakur College, Thane on 21st Jan, 09.
- Jankibai Rama Salvi College, Thane on 23rd Jan, 09.
- Shree Guru Nanak College, Chembur on 28th Jan, 09.
- And on 26th Jan., 09 NSS student volunteers also participated in a rally organized by ANIS from Kalwa Naka to Ambedkar Chowk.
- The topics discussed were fundamental duties in Indian Constitution, introduction of Indian Constitution, Fundamental rights & elections.
- On 24th Jan., 09 a programme on Women’s health & superstitious belief was held by ANIS led by Ms. Vandana Shinde.
- On 26th Jan., 09 all NSS students’ volunteers participated in the Flag Hosting Ceremony in the College at 8.00am on the Eve of Republic Day.
- On 29th Jan. 09 a workshop on Disaster Management was held at 10.30 am to 5.00pm. The invitees were Mr. Deshmukh Deputy Controller of Thane, Civil Defence Unit. The other speakers were Mr. Gawade, Mr. Kumbhar, Mr. Bagad from Civil Defence Unit, Thane.
- The programme was divided into two sessions.
In the lecture session the invitees discussed about various types of disaster
& disaster management. - In the practical session various techniques of rescuing people stuck up in a
building was taught to the NSS volunteers. Our students took active part in
demonstrations.

- On 30th Jan., 09 a lecture was organized on Astronomy v/s astrology. The guest speaker was Mr. Prakash Parkhe from Elphinston College. This programme was in collaboration with ANIS.
- From 01st Feb., 09 to 06th Feb., 09 NSS students volunteers participated in Pulse Polio drive.
- On 4th Feb., 09 NSS Unit of Joshi-Bedekar College along with H.N. Hospital organized Blood Donation Camp. 60 Blood bottles were collected. Around 100 students had registered for Blood donation.
- On 4th Feb., 09 & 5th Feb., 09 NSS students volunteer of our college Santosh Bhalerao and Suvidha Patil attended a two days workshop on Disaster Management in K.J.Somaiya College, Vidyavihar.
- On 7th Feb. 09 Joshi-Bedekar NSS Unit & ANIS organized ‘Sangata Samaroha of ANIS Activities for the year 2008-09. Around 70 volunteers from Joshi-Bedekar College & Volunteers from five other colleges attended the programme. Dr. Pabrekar, SLO was the Chief Guest for the programme. Noted scholar Ms. Puspa Bhave guided the NSS Volunteers about the activities of NSS with scientific approach.
