This year the theme which was given for the Thane Central was Emergency Intervention and Trauma Care, Counseling and Survey Technique.  The programmes in the special camp were designed accordingly under these two headings -

  • Emergency Intervention Including Trauma Care -

Two programmes were undertaken under this heading

  • On 2nd Nov 2009 – A morning session from 6.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. was held on ‘Physical Fitness’.  In any emergency situation for helping others being physically fit is a pre-requisite.  The NSS volunteers were trained in number of exercises, techniques of yoga, group dynamics etc.

  • On 3rd Nov 2009 - Thane (Central) District Coordinator
Prof. Anis Chowdhery was invited as a resource person to talk to students about ‘Crisis Management’.  He guided the students about the crisis situation either man-made or natural, responses of the people and the role NSS volunteers can play in averting the crisis or minimizing

  • Impact of the crisis.  His style of quoting examples was appreciated by NSS volunteers.

    •  Initials of Counseling and Data Collection -

The college is lucky enough to have its own counselor who is also a member of NSS Committee. Prof. Mrs. Suchitra Naik – Counsellor guided us in designing the sessions under this heading.

  • On the very first day of the camp i.e. on 29th Oct. 2009 Prof. Suchitra Naik engaged a session  on ‘Initials of Counselling and Survey Techniques’.
  • The Survey Technique method was implemented by NSS volunteers at Mhasrundi Pada on 31st Oct. 2009.  The volunteers surveyed 35 houses in the Pada.  The questionnaire prepared included general questions like no. of family members, male-female ratio, number of senior citizens, children etc.  education, health, source of income, addiction of the villagers, knowledge about family planning etc.  The methods of questionnaire and personnel interview were used to collect the data.  The NSS unit of the college is planning to undertake programmes in the Pada throughout the year.
  • While carrying social service the knowledge of law is essential.  So on 01st Nov. 2009 afternoon session was held on ‘Legal Counseling’. Advocate Sanjeev Punlekar conducted a session on legal counseling.  From the important Act i.e.  Right to Information he explained the volunteers about various laws that one must know while doing social service.
  • It is necessary to eradicate the Andhashraddhas among volunteers as well as villagers.  With this motive in mind on 02nd Nov. 2009 Ms. Vandana Shinde, President, Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti was invited.  Volunteers and ANIS together performed ‘ Andhashraddha Nirmulan Programme’ at Mhasrundi Pada.
  • Initially the adult villagers seemed to be reluctant to attend the programme.  Afterwards the mob gathered, showed interest in the programme and had live interaction with us. Of course it is very difficult to imagine the change in the attitude quickly.
  • On 3rd Nov. 2009 an afternoon session was held by Ms. Varsha Parchure.  She is presently working with an N.G.O. ‘Prasad Chikitsa’ and was an active N.S.S. volunteer of our college during her college days.  She narrated the students that how N.S.S. can be the foundation for the career in social service.  Students were inspired by her speech and her bold style of speaking.
  • For all those who want to enter into the field of social service, understanding of ‘Gender Equality’ is also a pre-requisite.  Programme Officer Prof. P. P. Tokekar held a session on Gender Equality.  She has completed a one year post Graduate Diploma in Women’s Studies organized by S.N.D.T. University.  She is also a teacher in Women Studies.

Along   with afternoon session, Shramadan was also an integral part of NSS Camp. NSS volunteers carried on  "अंधश्रद्धा निर्मुलन" at Mhasrundi Pada.  They also carried Shramdan in the campus of Hindu Seva Sangh, Mamnli where the camp was located.
Evening sessions were used in such a manner that with the games  and songs, there  will be recreation of volunteers   and at the same time it will contribute to the personality development of volunteers.

On the last day of the camp NSS Committee took feedback from the students about the sessions they liked, the things they learned, the contribution which they would like to make for the society..
The NSS Committee commented on the behaviour of the students and their responsibilities & duties.
Ultimately the best camper was selected and few NSS volunteers in the camp were chosen as ‘Star NSS Volunteers in the Camp’.
