Dr. V.N. Bedekar Memorial Debate Competition for law students
organized by VPM's TMC Law College, Thane was held on 25/02/2006.
This college is the only law college affiliated to Mumbai University
to be assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation
Council.
The
College invited all law colleges affiliated to Mumbai University
to participate. The competition was on the following topics :
1.
Truth should be a defence in an action for contempt of court
2. Article 44 of the Constitution of India shall be repealed.
3. Governors should be apolitical
4. Political parties should bear the expenses of by polls
Shri S.A. Dwivedi, the Honorable Addl. Dist. Judge Thane and Shri.
V.P. Patil, Advocate, Ex-Chief Judicial Magistrate Thane, Ex-Judge
and Ex-Principal Judge Labour court Thane were the judges for
the competition. Delivering the welcome address, Mrs. Srividhya
Jayakumar, Incharge Principal of the College insisted on the need
for more debating exercises for law students. She also said that
this memorial debate competition will be held every year in February,
the month in which Dr. V.N. Bedekar was born on the Mahashivarathri
Day. Dr. Shri Vijay Bedekar, the Chairman of Vidya Prasarak Mandal
inaugurating the competition, urged upon the law students to take
up social causes. He also Appealed that study of law should include
the study of the history of law. He briefly delved into the efforts
of the British in conducting researches and publishing works on
ancient Indian Law. He was of the opinion that the knowledge of
the constitution of India should be accessible to the little man
as well. Speaking on behalf of the judges, Mr. V.P. Patil congratulated
the college for its efforts and requested for Seminars on "History
on Law". He opined that people like Dr. Vijay Bedekar who
have the steel and the substance should have a place in Rajya
Sabha.
Teams from eight colleges participated. The first prize of Rs.
3000/- cash was secured by Government Law College. VPM's TMC Law
College bagged the second prize of Rs. 2000/- cash. And the third
prize of Rs. 1000/- was won by the New Law College. Best Speaker
Prize of Rs. 1500/- was won by Mr. Shreyas Shridhar of Government
Law College. The Second best speaker Miss. Prajakta Shenoy of
New Law College was awarded a prize of Rs. 1000/-
