A
presentation was given by our teacher; Mrs. Purnima Sathe on ‘Knowing and
Teaching Elementary Mathematics’ in Balshikshan Parishad held on 17th
November’2007.
The
topic of presentation was based on a research done by Mr. LiPing Ma whereby a
comparison was done between teaching of various mathematic topics by the
Chinese and the American teachers. It was concluded that the Chinese teachers
who explain the method on the basis of mathematical concepts are far more effective
than the American teachers who just explain the algorithm of the sum ie the
conceptually directed teachers are more effective than procedurally directed
teachers.
This
presentation was done in the form of dialogue and was appreciated by the
teachers (approx. 500 teachers) who had gathered from all over Maharashtra.
