The
Pre-Conference Workshop on BIOETHICS was attended by 90 Professors
of the Degree and Junior College of Joshi-Bedekar College. The
TYBA students offering Philosophy were invited to attend the Workshop.
Dr.(Mrs.) Singh in her address presented an overview of the importance
of BIOETHICS and the need for the seminar.
Dr.Uma Shankar Head of Department of Philosophy from SIES College
briefed the audience about Suicide & Euthanasia. By giving
various interesting examples from the current scenario she brought
these ethical issues to the "here & now" context.
Dr.Uma Shankar unveiled legal, social, ethical, and economic as
well as emotional aspects of Suicide & Euthanasia.
This lecture was followed by Prof.Bakul Joshi's discourse on 'Abortion
& Surrogate Motherhood'. Her views about both the issues were
thought provoking. To her "abortion was a sin even if law
doesn't call it a crime." Prof.Joshi threw light on changing
social fabric & family fabric resulting from surrogacy. She
also discussed both the ethical issues in the paradigm of Feminism
and expressed her frank opinion about the same.
Prof.Seshadri emphasized scientific and social aspects of "Organ
Transplantation". He mentioned the peculiar notion of 'cultural
lag' in the field of BIOETHICS in general & organ transplantation
in particular. He also thereby underlined our duty as modern citizens
to bridge this lag by exercising our right to information.
The workshop concluded with observations on the three presentation
by Dr.(Mrs.) S.A.Singh.
