Vidya
Prasarak Mandal (VPM) is a premier educational trust in Thane
which was established in August 1935. Ex. President Late Dr. V.
N. Bedekar had a dream of creating an “Island of Knowledge” (Jnandweepa)
in Thane. He had a great foresight for young generation of developing
Thane city and need of education to turn this youth into good
citizens of India and with this singular zeal, and enthusiastic
support from his colleagues, succeeded in bringing it in reality.
In 1969, Vidya Prasarak Mandal’s College started functioning with
all three faculties i.e. Arts, Commerce and Science on a 13 acre
piece of land which was marshy, muddy area inundated by water
of the nearby Thane creek under high tide. The then Chief Minister
of Goa, Hon. Shri Dayanand (Bhausaheb) Bandodkar gave a generous
donation of Rs. 3, 20,000 / - for the construction of the Science
college building. In June 1975, the affiliation of College was
changed to University of Mumbai from University of Pune, and in
the same year, B. N. Bandodkar College of Science was separated
from the Arts and Commerce College for administrative convenience
Many
new challenges,such as impact of technology on the educational
deliverance, increasing private participation necessitated continous
expansion of infrasturcture in the campus. VPM has responded to
these challenges and established 13 institutions, taking in cognizance
the consequent shift in values.
In
2008-2009 Vidya Prasarak Mandal opened the doors to four international
institutions of repute. An educational collaboration was signed
with California University of Technology, USA, for conducting
professional courses namely, Master of Business Administration
and Doctoral Programme in Business Administration. A MOU was signed
with the University Of Skovde Hogskolevagen Sweden for conducting
Graduate and Post Graduate Courses in Medical Biotechnology, Molecular
Biology and Physiology. An educational collaboration between VPM
and Northern College Of Applied Arts And Technology, Timmins,
Ontario, Canada gives opportunity for Diploma in Higher Education
for Polytechnic students. 26th May 2009 was a red letter day in
the annals of Vidya Prasarak Mandal Thane. Dr. Vijay V. Bedekar,
Chairman, VPM (Thane) launched the LONDON ACADEMY OF RESEARCH
& EDUCATION IN LONDON at the BRUNEI Hall in the SOAS, London,
UK.

Our institution welcomes the rationale behind the ideologies of
NAAC with great passion. In a developing country like India, with
its heterogeneous and massive population, mechanism for Assessment
and Accreditation of colleges is certainly the most effective
way of ensuring quality education.
In
academic year 2003-04 the college was awarded B++ grade with 81.75%
by NAAC, which is valid for 5 years.
