Promoting Conferences and Workshops

AIER has been encouraging the teaching fraternity of VPMT to take part in international confer-ences and seminars. At the same time it has been taking initiative to arrange these events at Thane for the benefit of a large number of teachers and students in the campus. Here is an account of some of the conferences, workshops and seminars.

A. International Conference Bhaskara900 

In order to celebrate the 900th birth anniversary of Bhaskaracharya, a great Indian mathematician of 12th century, an international conference Bhaskara900 was organised at the college campus in Thane from September 19 to 21, 2014. This conference brought together experts from India, USA, Germany, Japan, New Zealand and France. The deliberations conducted during the conference were quite enriching.

The proceedings of the conference entitled “Bhaskar Prabha” edited by Prof. K. Ramasubramanian (India), Prof. Takao Hayashi (Japan) and Dr. Clemency Montelle (New Zealand) has been released in a grand function held at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai in January 2019.

B. Workshops on Bhaskaracharya’s Lilavati

Bhaskaracharya, a great teacher has written profusely on mathematics and astronomy. His book Lilavati attempts to explain basic mathematical concepts in a lucid style. With a view to familiarise the students with this wonderful book and to create interest among them towards the learning of mathematics AIER initiated organization of workshops on Bhaskaracharya's Lilavati.

C. International Science and Mathematics Festival 

Realising the need to bring creative children together and appreciate their efforts an International Children's Science and Mathematics Festival ICSMF) is arranged biannually at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This event is hosted by Sri Prakash Educational Institutions under the guidance of AIER, Thane. So far, three events have been arranged in November 2012, November 2014 and No-vember 2016. The festival has two parts: Lecture demonstrations and Project presentations. Half time of the festival is used in conducting lecture demonstrations where experts in science populari-sations drawn from different parts of the world. The second half of the festival is used in presenting projects brought by student participants. Resource persons and students for this festival were drawn from various countries like India, Thailand. Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Denmark, Malaysia, etc.
